Day 8: Zuriza to Uson
About 19km, 1100m elevation gain.
Set out early in the morning, solo, with no gpx file for this variant so had to rely on my guidebook map, the waymarkings and just the GPS map of the region. It all worked out fine of course as the route was well marked. The weather was hot again, almost 35 today, but the scenery now that I have entered Aragon and the high Pyrenees is really something. Today took a long steep ascent up a valley in the side of a long ridge, where at the summit I had my jamon, cheese and tomato sandwich I bought from the camp-site. I think I made the right choice with the selection of route - while it may be longer and possibly more difficult, I have plenty of time here in Spain and am not rushed and should enjoy as much time as I can in the High Pyrenees - the highlight of the GR11, everyone says.
The way down tested me and by the time I got to the fantastic guesthouse around 3pm, I felt I had hit a wall. I think I will be scheduling a rest day in a few days. At least tomorrow to the refugio is short, though still is a lot of uphill. I have limited wifi and no reception so I probably will draft but not publish this post until I reach reception or internet later in the trail.
Add: dinner at the guesthouse was fantastic. A gazpacho, with croutons, and a kind of scrambled eggs with beans and mushrooms, followed by yoghurt and honey. Slept really well.
